5 Chenin Blanc wines to sip on this summer

As spring gives way to the rhythms of summer our thoughts naturally turn to the prospect of longer evenings, al fresco dining and sharing a bottle of something crisp, dry and fruity with friends next to the pool. Choosing which wines to drink during this time of year can be surprisingly complicated. As the temperature rises our palates crave lighter wines with less alcohol, more acidity and less of an oily, oaky character in the mouth, like Chenin Blanc.

The Chenin Blanc Association showcased 22 Chenin Blancs at the 12 Apostles in Campsbay, Cape Town the other day. The line-up consisted out of very affordable and easy drinking Chenin Blancs, fresh and fruit driven Chenin Blancs, rich and ripper Chenin Blanc, and more complex, wooded Chenin Blancs.

Some of the wines showed real potential while others displayed either sour or watery undertones. The following wines in the line-up did however receive my stamp of approval. The wines are all relatively light in alcohol which means an extra glass won’t hurt anyone. They are also fruity, tasty and retails at R55 or less.

Riebeek Chenin Blanc 2012 – R30

This wine from the Swartland region is the ideal summer patio quaffer. The wine is a juicy mix of pear, apple, and tangy citrus flavors. It’s light-medium in body and has a crisp, satisfying finish. At R30 a bottle it’s a real deal and offers exceptional value for money.

Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2012 – R38

This Chenin Blanc offers light, clean flavours and abundance of fruit such as lemon and green apples. This is the perfect wine to enjoy as an early-evening summer aperitif.

Stellenrust Chenin Blanc 2012 – R40

Exceptional value for money! It’s honest, likeable, and unabashedly fruit-forward. The aromas and flavours are too pleasing for this not to be a summer favorite.

Villiera Chenin Blanc 2011 – R43

The Double Gold Veritas winner definitely deserves its award stickers. This Chenin displays freshness, zippy acidity, and clean, pure fruit. It’s the type of wine that can be enjoyed on it’s own or in the presence of food.

Lutzville Diamond Collection Chenin Blanc 2011 – R55

The most expensive Chenin out of the lot but worth the extra cents. Lip-smacking crispness yet much richer and more complex than the other 4 wines. It’s perfect wine to relish beside the pool with light summer fare. It’s my favourite Chenin Blanc out of the 24 wines I’ve tasted, especially when one considers the price.
