5 Drinks To Avoid and 5 Drinks To Order If You`re Watching Your Weight

British health food retailer musclefood.com recently compiled a list of some the of most popular – but high-calorie – alcoholic drinks that could be ruining your diet. They also included a few waistline-friendly alternatives.

First, let’s look at the cocktails you should avoid if you are watching your weight:

  1. Long Island Iced Tea: This summertime favourite includes a long list of spirits including vodka, rum, gin, triple sec and tequila, as well as Coca Cola. A typical 420 ml glass contains about 424 calories – which is about the same as a small soft-serve chocolate-vanilla twist ice cream served on a cone with sprinkles.
  2. Pina Colada: This coconut and pineapple frozen treat regularly contains 300 calories per 230 ml glass.
  3. Mojito: Thanks to the simple syrup in this classic drink, an average 230 ml glass contains about 242 calories.
  4. Margarita: These sour, salty treats typically come in at 280 calories for a 230 ml serving.
  5. Chocolate martini: According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a 2.5 oz chocolate martini has a whooping 4,188 calories – that’s more than double the calories an average adult woman should consume per day.

Here are a few slightly healthier alternatives:

  1. Cosmopolitan: This drink, best known as Carrie Bradshaw’s favourite on Sex and the City, has less alcohol than a Long Island Iced Tea and will only run you 100 calories for a 250 ml glass.
  2. Fuzzy Naval: This peach schnapps and orange juice drink will run you 120 calories, but is a better replacement for a Pina Colada.
  3. Classic Martini: With no added mixers, this classic cocktail is only 70 calories – if you don’t eat the olives!
  4. Moscow Mule: If you are having lime, withdrawal from ditching the margaritas, try a Moscow Mule for 120 calories.
  5. Literally anything else is better than a chocolate martini. So, go on, treat yourself!
