Backsberg is pleased to be the official wine supplier to the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, which runs from the 5^th to the 15^th of June 2014 in cinemas in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Backsberg had the honour of attending the premiering night, where the award-winning documentary film, Square, opened the event.

The night included a guest list of prominent South African film writers, producers, directors and key players in the documentary film industry. The foyer at the NuMetro V&A Waterfront bustled with activity as these invited guests rubbed shoulders, enjoyed canapés and celebrated with Backsberg wines. Albie Sachs held a captive audience as he opened the festival. His story is documented in Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and The New South Africa which explores the remarkable life of this award-winning author and Constitutional Court judge.

Backsberg Estate Cellars is proud to be associated with the festival. Fourth-generation Backsberg proprietor, Simon Back, notes: “We are incredibly excited to play a part in one of SA’s premier film events. Film and fine wine is the perfect pairing.” Before the film, the Encounters-Backsberg sponsorship video was aired to a public audience for the first time. Filmed during Harvest 2014, the clip shows a documentary-inspired story of the workers at Backsberg and the beauty of the vineyards around harvest time.
