Blaauwklippen taps into the spirits market with the launch of three new gins

As Cape Town’s micro-distilleries are starting to kick things into high gear, a few folks are taking some interesting approaches when it comes to the hooch. Last week, Blaauwklippen Wine Estate released its first premium batch of hand-crafted gins. The Triple Three range comprises of 3 distinct flavours, namely 100% Juniper Berry Gin, Citrus Infusion Gin and African Botanicals Gin.

What makes the range really special? Apart from being damn delicious, the 100% Juniper Berry Gin is South Africa’s first craft gin expressing the unique flavour of hand-selected whole juniper berries.

Talking about their distilling process, Cellarmaster Rolf Zeitvogel explains that the Triple Three gins were distilled in a state of the art German copper column-pot still, to make a unique, smooth and flavourful line of spirits.

100% Juniper Berries Gin

The first gin in the Triple Three range is carefully crafted from the finest juniper berries. Fresh essential oil fragrances like menthol, eucalyptus, pine, cloves and lime are gently emphasised by whiffs of white pepper. Notes of vanilla and the floral scent of rose petals reflect the sweet juiciness juniper naturally carries.

Citrus Infusion Gin

Made from natural sun-ripened oranges from the Eastern Cape and Stellenbosch grown organic lemons, this full-bodied gin  smells fresh, clear with hints of citrus coming through. Rhubarb and lemon grass whiffs bring a gentle sweetness to the overall taste.

African Botanicals Gin

This gin is delicious on its own and over ice. It’s robust enough to stand up to tonic and smooth enough to craft the ultimate gin martini. Herbs, dried and fresh tea leaves of buchu and rooibos, cloves, cedar wood shavings and pine are adjoined by delicate lemon peel, menthol, dark berries, moss and earthiness. Flavours of forest-honey, maple and almonds deliver sweet and toasty notes.
