Boplaas released the Ouma Cloete Straw wine 2015 to celebrate its history

Carel Nel owner/cellar master’s grandmother Nettie Cloete was related to the famous Cloete family that made world class sweet wines in the late 1700’s.

After feloksera destroyed the Constantia vineyards some family members travelled inland and ended up in Calitzdorp.

The 2015 Ouma Cloete Straw wine was made from Muscadel (the same grapes that was used in Constantia) and Viognier by pinching the stem and the sugar content went up to 40°B. After fermentation on the skins for 24 hours it was pressed for another 24 hours. Less than 400 liters per ton was yielded from the raisined grapes.

The wine has a lovely golden colour with flavour of honey, litchi, Muscat, tropical fruits, apricot and orange peal.

It has a good acidity with a rich, lingering luscious finish and is ideal to serve with desserts and cheese.

This beautiful wine is packaged in a 500ml bottle and sells for R110.00 per bottle from the two Boplaas tasting rooms in Calitzdorp and Little Brak River.
