Colour-Changing Labels Signal When Food Goes Bad

Scotland-based startup Insignia Technologies developed a “smart” label that changes color over time to indicate how long a package of food has been open.

With the smart food label, the startup aims to help reduce unnecessary waste of food due to confusing or misinterpretation of food labels.

Insignia Technologies was founded in 2012 from a merger between Insigniapack, an ink printing service, and Novas Technologies, a spin-out company from the University of Strathclyde, where the patented technology used in the labels was initially developed.
