Fairview scoops top accolades at the 2012 Annual Dairy Championships

Paarl, April 2012: The Fairview Vineyard Cheesery, in Paarl, scooped a host of cheese awards at the 2012 South African National Dairy Championships held on Wednesday, 25 April 2012 in Stellenbosch.

90 superb dairy products were honoured and named SA Champions. Fairview accolades include a Qualité Award, five first places, eight second places and three third places, marking a remarkable success for the company. Some of the Fairview cheeses receiving awards included – Roydon Camembert, La Beryl (a Pont L’aveque style cheese), Blue Rock and White Rock with Apricots. A select 26 dairy products received the Qualité Award – South Africa’s only officially acknowledged symbol of outstanding dairy quality. Fairview received this award for their Roydon Camembert, adding to its’ collection of national and international awards, reaffirming its position as South Africa’s most awarded camembert.

The Fairview Vineyard Cheesery’s team is lead by cheese maker Louis Lourens, who has been with the company since 1990. His extensive experience and insight into the industry is vital in maintaining Fairview’s position as an industry leader and innovator. Lourens is assisted by cheese maker Bruce Rowbotham, who joined the company in 2005. In addition, Fairview has assembled a team of experienced staff and food technologists who assist in all aspects of new product development and quality control.

“A good all-round performance”, comments Louis Lourens, Fairview cheese maker. “We are delighted and thankful for our acknowledgement at this prestigious award ceremony and are especially excited about the Qualité Award for our Roydon Camembert.” Fairview’s dedicated cheese team have been hard at work, constantly developing new and innovative cheeses, some of which are currently on sale at the Fairview farm deli. Fairview’s own, Michael Visagie, was selected as one of four cheese makers to be awarded a cheese making scholarship to Burgundy, France. Michael will leave for France later this year to learn from various French cheese masters as part of a co-operation agreement between the Governments of the Western Cape and Burgundy.

The South African Dairy Championships are held annually to recognise the leading products across a range of categories and it serves as a great platform for benchmarking products in the dairy industry, in a quest to improve quality. Previous Fairview winners at the South African National Dairy Championships include the La Beryl, Blue Tower, Blue Rock and Roydon Camembert, to mention a few.
