Join Graham Beck`s Erika Obermeyer at The Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa will see out Women’s Month 2013 with a special Food & Wine Pairing Dinner in Azure Restaurant on Friday 30 August, co-hosted by Graham Beck Cellar Master Erika Obermeyer and Azure’s Executive Sous Chef Christo Pretorius. Obermeyer says she is delighted to be the first female host of Azure’s monthly Food & Wine Pairing series.

The collaboration with The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa will give Obermeyer a chance to introduce Graham Beck’s new The Game Reserve range to a discerning audience of both international hotel guests and local epicureans. The new range represents the culmination of Graham Beck’s conservation efforts and pioneering approach to farming in harmony with nature, demonstrating the exceptional progress the vineyard has made in sustainable viticulture and wine production. The Twelve Apostles Hotel’s location is in perfect synergy with this philosophy – situated on Cape Town’s most scenic route, it is poised above the Atlantic Ocean and flanked by the Twelve Apostles mountain range and majestic Table Mountain National Park, a World Heritage Site which recently gained New7Wonders of Nature status.

Each of the Graham Beck Game Reserve cultivars feature one of the many indigenous animals and plants found in the Graham Beck Private Nature Reserve on the Robertson Estate. Every wine in the range therefore tells a unique and compelling story, celebrating the splendid natural diversity of this remarkable, yet intensely fragile region.

Obermeyer will welcome guests at the event with a glass of chilled Graham Beck MCC, before settling in to enjoy the decadent four-course menu. Executive Sous Chef Christo Pretorius will first serve Franschhoek Cured Salmon Trout with cured passion fruit, ceviche, asparagus and lemon grass, paired with Graham Beck’s The Game Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2012. This is to be followed by Quail Curry with confit leg, spiced breast, lentil todka, compressed cucumber and cumin yoghurt, which Obermeyer matches with Graham Beck’s Bowed Head Chenin Blanc 2011. The main course of Lamb Loin, Moroccan empanada, harrisa, charred aubergine, cumin, baby carrots, pistachio shortbread and minted jus will be beautifully enhanced by the Graham Beck Game Reserve Shiraz 2010. Dinner concludes with a sweet flourish, thanks to Chef Pretorius’ Chocolate Tres Leches with chocolate mousse, forest berries and sable chocolate crumbs. Graham Beck’s Coffeestone Cabernet 2011 presents the perfect accompaniment to this last course, before Petits Fours are served with tea and coffee.

Having joined Graham Beck in 2005, Obermeyer says her objective is a wine style that is earthy yet elegant, brimming with finesse and beautiful fruit, and rounded off with an appealing mid-palate. ‘My winemaking style is to really capture the essence of the vineyard in the bottle. In our wines, we’ve got the best of both worlds – Old World elegance combined with the up-front fruit from the New World sunshine.’
