Lourensford unveils high-end sparkling wine in Cape Town

Cuvee 89 MCC Brut Zero 2007 is the name of the new high-end and super premium sparkling wine by Lourensford, which has recently been launched at SeaBreeze Fish & Shell in Cape Town.

So how is the Cuvee 89 different from other brands of MCC and what makes it special?

When cellar master Hannes Nel conceived the Cuvee 89, he wanted to create a masterpiece according to time honoured methods of Method Cap Classique-making, yet having its own identity within the hierarchy of sparkling wines.

The Lourensford Cuvee 89 MCC Brut Zero 2007 gets its name and elegant character from spending an additional 89 months on the lees after it had been bottled. This prolonged maturation is a key component which leads to the development of complexities and aromas and the end result is a product which is both mesmerizing and chic.

“Making Méthod Cap Classique is a fine art that tests a winemaker’s skill to the limit. It keeps you humble and on your toes. But what excites me most about our Cuvee 89 is that it has matured so elegantly, illustrating that South Africa can produce MCC’s with ageing potential. In fact I expect this to be enjoyable drinking even in 2022!”, says Nel.

This is an aperitif befitting any occasion, but the signature dish for this style of sparkling wine is undoubtedly a mixed seafood platter served simply with lemon or garlic butter.

Located on the foot hills of the Helderberg mountains in Somerset West, Lourensford produced just 525 bottles of the wine, which are available exclusively through the Lourensford Estate tasting room.

Expect to pay around R890 for a bottle.
