Winter wine warmers – a trio of events

b2ap3_thumbnail_cabfranc-event-1.jpgIts coming up time for the annual Taste the Helderberg get-together being held, as usual, at the NH Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. Thursday June 11 is the date to diarise and the doors open at 5pm.

Regional fare and fine wines – a choice of more than 100 – can be mixed and matched as around 25 cellars showcase their best and signature dishes from top local chefs and artisanal producers can be sipped and sampled.

Cab Franc comes into its own on Saturday June 20 when more than a dozen Cape producers showcase their products at Avontuur estate, off the R44, near Somerset West. Starting at noon, visitors can choose to relax in a lounge, or sit at café chairs with their choice of samples, while food stalls will offer plenty of lunch options.

Those taking part include the host Avontuur, along with Camberley, Cape Chamonix, CK, Doolhoof, Druk-My-Niet, Hermanuspietersfontein, Lynx, Mont du Toit, Ormonde, Raats, Ridgeback and Nelson.

They throw away the textbook and push winemaking boundaries way beyond convention. The Young Guns, as they are known, will star at Wine Cellar’s annual show, introducing the wines they make under their own labels – although many also work for well-known cellars. A selection of South Africa’s most innovative young winemakers will showcase their wines and expound their philosophies at an informal seated tasting taking place in three major cities.

The lineup includes a vintage mystery Gun whose identity will be revealed at the show. Those taking part are Gavin Bruwer of B-Vintners, Mick and Jeanine Craven of Craven Wines, Lucinda Heyns of Eendevanger, Ryan Mostert of Avant Garde Wines, Tremayne Smith of The Blacksmith and Jasper Wickens of Swerwer.

The event starts at 6pm on June 24 at the Cape Sun hotel in Strand street, Cape Town.Tickets, which include a light meal, cost R275, book online at www.winecellar.co.za/young-guns-5.
