SA’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon?

Following the 5-star success of the previous vintage, Waterford Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 has been rated the top SA Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2015 Christian Eedes Report. The 2012 is medium bodied (only 13.5% alcohol), but what impresses most is the freshness and layered, dry finish. It is more Claret than Napa in style and shows that South Africa can produce Cabernet Sauvignon of great complexity, structure and longevity whilst maintaining freshness. Supported by classic tannins, the wine should easily last 10–15 years. We have spoken about the epic 2012 vintage on a few occasions, and here is yet another excellent example. And at R185, it packs a ridiculous price-to-quality punch!

Taste some the top-performing wines in the Christian Eedes Cabernet Sauvignon Report in Joburg on 10 June and in Cape Town on 17 June . Tickets cost R225 per person and include light canapes after the tasting.

‘What is exciting for me as an international wine reviewer and commentator is finding a country, a region, a winery that can get cabernet fully ripe and expressive and make something great of it. This doesn’t happen very often. There are so few places on the planet where you can make really great cabernet. If you can, do it because the world wants that. It’s not that you’re being a copycat Bordeaux or Napa Valley look alike. You can do it and express South Africa.’ – Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Editor in Chief of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. May 2015.
