Classic Portuguese Wine & Food Festival

Classic Portuguese Wine Festival

Discovering a new bottle of wine, new region/country, or even a new grape varietal is something that we as wine lovers always strive for. Some of us (the fortunate ones) perhaps had the opportunity to taste, drink and purchase the Mighty Bordeaux 1855 Grand Cru Classe, or maybe some Cru Bourgeois as well. Then I’m sure that you are familiar with Premier and Grand Cru’s from Burgundy. I can carry on and include some Super Tuscany’s, Californian Super Cab’s and even some Penfold’s from “down under”.

Now the question is “ho’s got next?” Whether you are a shell-shocked consumer looking for alternatives to soaring prices in familiar regions, or just someone wanting new experiences in wine, one good answer might be the wines of Portugal. If you are a typical wine lover, when you think of the wines of Portugal your first thought has to be of the great fortifieds, particularly the famous Ports of the Douro Valley. If you know any of the dry wines, your most likely experiences have been with inexpensive low end wines, from simple reds to Mateus Rosé.

Yet, quietly but steadily, Portugal has developed a wine industry that provides both good values at the low end, and at the high end, some exceptional wines.

So, set aside the “usual suspects” and join us for the brand new wine experience. There will be wines for everyday consumption as well as ones that you can put away for a decade, two or three.

Portugal must be the most underrated wine-producing country on the planet!!!

Tim Atkin

What’s the most underrated wine-producing country in world? You could make a case for Greece, Argentina and even Germany, but I’d choose Portugal. Put Mateus Rose and a glass of Port to one side and this comparatively small nation on the edge of Western Europe is undiscovered territory for most wine drinkers – and we are missing out.
