Interview with Medwin Pietersen – The New Tasting Room Manager at Backsberg

We would like to introduce you to our new Tasting Room Manager, Medwin Pietersen. We sat down with him and chatted about his life, career, future aspirations, and, of course, wine.

Q: What enticed you to want to work in the wine industry?

A: When I first began my career in the industry, I really wanted to travel and believed that this route would provide me with the opportunity to do so. It did and shortly after starting my first wine-related job, I travelled to both Sweden and France on industry training initiatives. Now that I’m a little older it’s more about the personal relationships one is able to create. I’m really a people’s person and I love to communicate with others. This industry allows me to express myself and make people happy. If other people are happy, I’m happy too.

Q: Can you tell us more about your past within the industry?

A: I commenced my journey at Solms Delta, working my up through the ranks from a security guard, to doing in-store wine tastings, to eventually becoming their Tasting Room Manager. This was followed by a job at Warwick Wine Estate where I held the position of Wine Club Ambassador. I then moved onto a stint at Fairview, to try something different. Now, I’m honoured to say, I work at Backsberg Estate Cellars as the new Tasting Room Manager.

Q: What do you do in your free time?

A: I am actively involved in my community, our local church, and our rugby team. At the moment my rugby team is training two hours every evening so I’m definitely working on my time management skills.
