Nederburg changes gear

Nederburg cellarmaster Razvan Macici presented a masterclass in anthropomorphic winemaking today when he unveiled four new wines from his capacious cellar. The names may be a bit clunky (Young Airhawk, Brew Master, Motorcyle Marvel and Anchorman), bursting with testosterone, but the wines themselves are wonderful, thanks to their seamless palates and unbeatable value for money. As Woolworths wine buyer Ivan Oertle commented “they’ve got the price points right. Too many brands overprice their flagships”. At R100 and below, these wines kick serious butt, as you can see from the reactions of the Woolworths winos, below:

The most feminine was a 2009 vintage Bordeaux blend called Brew Master which was pure Catherine Deneuve, smoky, sultry with unbeatable finesse. At R100, wannabe Stellenbosch icons should pasop. The Motorcyle Marvel, by way of contrast, is a savoury and spicy Gypsy King. So what if Razvan broke the 1954 BSA motorbike hired for the promotional video and his son, riding pillion, had to complain he could go faster on his bicycle? Suffering for art is a lesson Razvan junior still has to learn. This is an Almodovar of a wine.

The Anchorman is no TV reporter, but rather an elegant Chenin Blanc with depths of flavour waiting to be revealed while the Young Airhawk, a wooded Sauvignon Blanc, will give many a Chardonnay a go on the catwalk of elegance.

There are no varietals listed on the labels and Nederburg appears in the tiniest of fonts. These understated beauties may yet revolutionize a wine list just up your street.
