KykNet Koningryk

We were in Kyknet Kountry for a Kokkedoor lunch today. At Vondeling, on the Poor Varterberg, as Wine Speccie memorably christened the appellation a few years back in another of their sharp exposés of SA wine. Although what Speccie publisher Marvin Shanken would have made of the starter – spek- en kaasvetkoek met mosterdskuim – (below) can only be imagined. This is kinkelkos (kinky food) at its crinkliest. Phil Spector meets John Waters over a glass of Vondeling Chardonnay 2010, although a Chenin Blanc would have been my call, for reasons of authenticity. Or if you wanted to push the boot out, a white Pinotage, even.

While MasterChefSA is a vehicle for Robertsons Spices, that role is reprised at Kokkedoor by Funky Ouma (below). There was one lurking at the bottom of the goodie bag each of the sixty lunchers was gifted, cackling like a maniac.

Wildskenkel en groenbone (below) was the main course, along with the Erica Shiraz 2009. I’m judging Paarl Shiraz this coming week at Nederburg, so here’s an onthoukok suggestion for chefs at the Red Table. Takes chicken pie to the Next Level.

A great day out in some of the most beautiful terroir in the Winelands (below). Bakkies outnumbered BMWs in the parking with the only bow-ties those in the Toasty Show photos on the tasting room walls.
