Naughty Boy to be Diners Club Winemaker of the Year?

When we ended up with a unanimous winner last week – 0.6 out of 20 clear of the field – savvy judge Carrie Adams (below) – one of the few Adams in SA with her own front teeth – guessed the winner was from Bot River. The acid freshness and vibrant fruit led her buds to the Overberg, past elegant Elgin and just before hedonistic Hermanus.

Could it be that crafty 2011 blend of Pinotage, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from Wildekrans made by Naughty Boy of note, William Wilkinson (below)? Wildekrans has been boxing way above its weight class for a couple of vintages now. I for one will not be betting against Billy the Kid.

Bumped into Morne Vrey, the Wine Wizzard sans bowtie from Delaire Graff at Veritas on Saturday night and he admitted after I blogged a photo of the winning wine, he poured a glass of his Botmaskop and tried to match the two. Infrared analysis from the NSA has no doubt been requested by Laurence Graff in London. For if Lawrie can sort diamonds, wine should present no problems.
