Newstead: New Kids on the Block

Since Plettenberg Bay had long been the playground for Jozi’s rich and famous like the Wendy Appelbaums (whose white was hailed last night as best in SA by the Sighted Spoofers aka Platter Wine Guide), the Jezzer Ords (of Didata and Waterford fame) and Dave King (pioneer of Quoin Rock) it makes total sense for Sue and Doug Lund to bring their Newstead Family Vineyards up to Food|Wine|Design in Hyde Park. IMG 1576 615x345 Newstead: New Kids on the Block Their stand (above) wins my prize for being the greenest and their 2013 Sauvignon Blanc is a ditto. It has an amazing oily palate and those fresh green flavours so hated by the FNB SBIG panel which chose wines that taste like Chenin Blanc for their contaversial Top Ten this year. This is New Zealand on the Craggs. Sue designed the stand and Doug (below) is the farmer have learnt his trade in KZN. The wines are made by Anton Small of Villiera fame. IMG 1578 576x1024 Newstead: New Kids on the Block The unwooded Chardonnay 2012 is wonderful: creamy and chalky with a touch of toast from 5% barrel ferment and plenty of lees contact. The kind of wine that gives those tired of Sauvignon an alternative. Still it seems that Sauvignon Blanc, much hated by the Swartland Independent, was grape of the minute at the Swartland Revolution last night. Orders for an extra 10 cases were placed last week to one Swartland Conformist who’d already supplied the Revs with 20 cases. Meanwhile, if only the old boere on the Partyberg could read English or even read in some cases, the recent Wine Spectator feature on their appellation would get their blood boiling. No mention of pioneers like Danie Malan, a Diners Club Winemaker of the Year for his Allesverloren Shiraz. It’s all Eben, Chris and Adi, Marc and Callie and Johann Rupert. Time for the foundation of the Swartland Conformists, perhaps. With Zakkie and Danie and die manne.  In Jozi they may hijack your car but in the Cape they hijack your history. As they say in the Swartland “people who live in glass houses should not get undressed with the lights on.”
