XO for the Christmas Stocking

No flies on Rémy Martin who have seized the brandy zeitgeist this year to launch the 1738 Accord Royal Cognac, a blend of 65% Grande Champagne and 35% Petite Champagne grapes and nearly 240 different eaux-de-vie aged in oak barrels from four to 20 years.

The name remembers the decision of King Louis XV of France back in 1738 to give Rémy Martin special permission to plant new vines on his land, despite a nationwide ban to that effect. His leniency in this regard was attributed to the provenance and quality of the Cognac. Back in 1738, brandy, which had been first distilled 66 years previously by a cook on board the VOC ship De Pijl in Table Bay, was all the rage in Cape Town. So this coming festive season, Capetonians and other party animals will be greeting Rémy as a long lost friend.

If I can find a bottle, I’ll take it to the launch of The Bunker on Bree which is opening on my birthday.
