Overgaauw 1 Bordeaux 0

At a prime rib dinner last night on Lake Tahoe (below) the Overgaauw 2000 Cabernet took on four of the six 2010 Bordeauxs we’d bought at Total Wines in Reno. SA was so far ahead of the field it was as if the Rat Pack had returned to the Cal-Neva.

The Dufort-Vivens, a second growth, came second but a couple of the French were downright green and twiggy. Wine Spectator scored the DV 91/100 and Wine Enthusiast 93. The tasting note on Wikipedia goes

“Tasting note: The deep ruby 2010 Durfort-Vivens has notes of bright red cherries, plums and blackberries, supported by a great vibrancy of classic young perfumed Margaux flavours and gently-handled tannins, leading to a long finish.”

The main difference between the Overgaauw and DV is the smooth maturity age brings and the fruit sweetness direct  from the Stellenboschkloof. No wonder Wendy Appelbaum finds such success Stateside with her De Morgenzon wines.
