UK Investors pile into the Hemel en Aarde

One of the more benign side effects of the collapse of the rand is the arrival of UK investors in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Jonathan Drake is now an owner of Creation Wines while Holly Bellingham from Suffolk owns Sumaridge together with Simon Turner. Which does wonders for wine sales. This week the Spectator magazine is punting the 2008 Sumaridge ‘Epitome’  “a gloriously rich, juicy and spicy blend of Syrah, Pinotage and Merlot. The estate is just a few miles from the fishing village of Hermanus — famous for its whale-watching — whose cool maritime climate is ideal for the production of stylish vino. Ridiculously cheap at £12 (down from £15.99) it’s a great partner to braised ox cheek.”

Quite a surprise to see such a daring food recommendation from the Speccie that we’ll forgive the mistranslation of Hemel-en-Aarde as ‘Heaven on Earth.’
