CNN’s list of ten wineries to visit in the Cape’s magnificent winelands is always likely to stir controversy but Claire Hu’s one yesterday is a doozy. Recommending Constantia Uitsig for the food at La Colombe when my sources insist the restaurant is closing, is unfortunate. And not a single destination in Franschhoek, the Disneyland for Dora. So who chose Claire?

Claire’s choices (Crystallum, Creation, Constantia Uitsig, Stark-Condé, Upland, Fairview, Blaauwklippen, Weltevrede, Groote Post and Waterkloof) are a mixture of the predictable, bizarre and whimsical. Choosing Blaauwklippen over Spier “for the kids” is a bit of an ask. Rather go there for Zinfandel.

Who needs Great Wine Capitals of the World to rate these places when CNN has Claire. Great Wine Capitals go for Vergelegen, Babylonstoren, Delaire Graff, La Motte and Spice Route. Not a single destination in common. Half the number but better choices? You bet.
