That Douw Steyn in one lucky insurance salesman. The Sunday Times (the real one in the UK) publishes an annual rich list and Douw has seen his wealth go up by £50m to £600m this year. That’s R10.4 billion Randelas – almost in the Rupert league. He’s now ranked 170th in the UK. According to the Guardian, Douw’s windfall is the rewards of “a hugely popular meerkat TV advertising campaign for his firm comparethemarket.com. His personal fortune has soared from £200m in 2009, when the meerkats first appeared in ads.”

Which just has to be good news for big Schalk Burger who makes Meerkat wines in Wellington. If Schalk’s Pinotage isn’t booming in Bermondsey then my name’s Aleksandr Orlov!
