Sediment Stirs the Spittoon

No sooner had my flat screen faded to black from the maiden flighting of Sediment on KykNet yesterday afternoon than social media burst into life. Not all the comments were positive. Confirming two things: Afrikaans wine commentary is as bitchy as the English version and translation by Bing is far from competent when it comes to the language of Leipoldt.

Gekyk only after Sediment on KykNet! What a k.. name vir ‘n wynprogram. And that offer is ewe k. Kry asb tog someone with charisma and knowledge of wyn to so a program to offer, someone soos Emile Joubert or Duimpie Baylie. Hell, us try to to more to human experience, kry to wyn rate and to enjoy, and Sediment help decide nie. DIS soos vir motorprogramme, just good sleep that most unemployment!

My own comments are it is several orders of magnitude better than Molly en Wors, a sitcom which followed which is without doubt the naffest thing I’ve ever seen on SA TV. It makes the Toasty Show look classy. What happened to the famous Afrikaans tradition of puik programme? I’m talking Het van Verlangekraal and Koöperasie Stories. Surely not all our TV talent has emigrated to Toronto?

On the plus side, the presenter is a fresh young face and the focus was on young winemakers like Wynand Grobler and Franschhoek wine producers you’ve never heard of like Black Elephant Vintners. Not the usual suspects with big chequebooks: Boekenhoutskloof, L’Ormarins and La Motte.

Although Franschhoek is a funny place to start the series as its the appellation famous for lavish tasting rooms showcasing grapes grown elsewhere: typically Wellington, Elgin, Darling and the Swartland. Bashing the presenter JP Quickelberge is a low blow. The whole thing was his idea and he went and landed the sponsorship and persuaded KykNet to give him a break. So give him his 15 minutes of fame, he’s earned them.

I was disappointed that not more was made of the taste-along potential for the program. I’d have loved to have a glass of the Sauvignon Blanc from Black Ellie – how long before its nicknamed elephant’s piss?, Hoity Toity from Miss Molly and the Foundation Stone of Wynand. Although 5:30pm is a bit early to hit the pots, even if Planeetwyn is trying to catch a few zeeeees…
