Here are some ‘ball park questions’ for my forthcoming feature on South Africana wine. I would grateful for your comments and insight. If you feel I have missed something, please to add to your answers.
Questions

What are the greatest challenges/opportunities facing SA grape growers, wine producers and brand owners?

What do you perceive as the position and future of SA with in the global wine market? What is SA’s USP (unique selling proposition), to use marketing speak?

What are the key trends in plantings and wine styles?

Which countries are your best export markets?

What are different markets looking for in terms of styles, formats, prices?

What are buyers and specifiers after from SA wines?

Many regard SA’s Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc as ‘world class’ and Pinotage as ‘work in progress/coming of age’. What are your opinions?

Regions such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Elgin, Robertson, are well known to SA watchers. Which are the up-and-coming regions and the ones to watch?

As one SA wine distributor in Blighty commented on WOSA’s input “it reads like they don’t know the answers or are to busy to do their own job.” Perhaps they’re all at the Nederburg Auction! Is this what producers get for the R50 million a year they pay WOSA?
