Everything old is new again. Retro is the rage, with anything from the ‘50s and ‘60s being rediscovered. This year’s theme for our annual potjiekos-cookout takes is cue from ‘Take Five’, the mesmerizing, sexy jazz piece made famous in this era by Dave Brubeck – and Paul Desmond on sax.

And take the time out” …
Compose your own potjie to your own beat. One proviso is that you use 5 ingredients. This is quite generous, as salt, pepper, herbs, spices, water and wine do not count as one of the 5 ingredients.
Get into the Take Five groove by considering your choice from the 5 food groups: Grains / Fruit and vegetables / (Proteïen / Fats, oils and sweets / dairy such as cream, cheese or yoghurt. But other than the 5 ingredients-rule it’s up to the team how and with what you serve it, you and your team decide whether you want to dress up or down, set a retro-styled table or not…. There will be a special prize for ‘spangees’, though. (hint, hint, wink wink)
The tradition that only winemakers and amateur-cooks may compete still applies. Sorry, chefs – we know you are all fired-up to show your cooking skills over the embers.
We break with tradition by hosting the annual Potjiekos competition at a new venue: Welbeloond Wine Farm.
The competition takes place on Wednesday, 18 April 2012.
Judging panel: A panel of four judges has been selected to decide which Take Five Potjie wins the bragging rights and the title for the Best Potjies 2012.

To make it easier for the judges, as well as Errieda and her PR team, please provide a copy of your menu and the recipes on the day.

Please send me confirmation of your teams that will be participating no later than Monday 9 April 2012. Information on starting times, practical arrangements and logistics will follow once we receive your confirmation.
The event and the dishes will be photographed professionally for post-publicity and for your own use.
Directions to Welbeloond:
Traveling north on the N7 from Cape Town, take the Durbanville/Table View (exit 22) off ramp to the left; at the traffic lights take slip lane to the left, at T-junction turn right into farm gate. Note that you will be crossing the traffic coming from the left along Potsdam road.
Traveling south on the N7 from Malmesbury, take the Durbanville/Table View (exit 22) off ramp to the left, at the traffic lights turn right across bridge through next set of lights, down to T junction, at T junction turn right into farm gate. Note that you will be crossing the traffic coming from the left along Potsdam road.
Traveling north along Potsdam Road, drive straight across the intersection into farm gate
Traveling from Durbanville on the Tygerberg Road M13, turn right into Contermanskloof Road, after 500m before Atlas Park turn left towards Potsdam interchange, carry on straight through the two sets of traffic lights down to T junction, at T junction turn right into farm gate. Note that you will be crossing the traffic coming from the left along Potsdam road.
