Take Five with Durbanville Wine Valley Annual Oes-af Potjiekos Competition

Everything old is new again. Retro is the rage, with anything from the ‘50s and ‘60s being rediscovered. This year’s theme for our annual potjiekos-cookout takes is cue from ‘Take Five’, the mesmerizing, sexy jazz piece made famous in this era by Dave Brubeck – and Paul Desmond on sax.

“Won’t you stop and take
A little time out with me
Just take five
Stop your busy day
And take the time out” …

Compose your own potjie to your own beat. One proviso is that you use 5 ingredients. This is quite generous, as salt, pepper, herbs, spices, water and wine do not count as one of the 5 ingredients.

Get into the Take Five groove by considering your choice from the 5 food groups: Grains / Fruit and vegetables / (Proteïen / Fats, oils and sweets / dairy such as cream, cheese or yoghurt. But other than the 5 ingredients-rule it’s up to the team how and with what you serve it, you and your team decide whether you want to dress up or down, set a retro-styled table or not…. There will be a special prize for ‘spangees’, though. (hint, hint, wink wink)

The tradition that only winemakers and amateur-cooks may compete still applies. Sorry, chefs – we know you are all fired-up to show your cooking skills over the embers.

We break with tradition by hosting the annual Potjiekos competition at a new venue: Welbeloond Wine Farm.

The competition takes place on Wednesday, 18 April 2012.

Judging panel: A panel of four judges has been selected to decide which Take Five Potjie wins the bragging rights and the title for the Best Potjies 2012.

  • Jonathan Snashall, freelance drinks writer (incl)Playboy and Live Out Loud), itinerant winemaker, and blogger. By his own admission he “consults, guide, blog, write and bath in wine.”
  • Bryony Whitehead: food and wine editor of iAfrica.com.
  • Jan Laubscher & Anel Grobler of the website spitorswallow.co.za and winetimes.co.za with over 10 000 followers on twitter.

To make it easier for the judges, as well as Errieda and her PR team, please provide a copy of your menu and the recipes on the day.
