South Africa’s first ever box wine blind tasting was hosted by Spit or Swallow on 4 November 2010 at the rooftop of the Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town. 25 Brave souls, dress in their best, tasted 14 different wines in 1 hour in search of the best bag in a box. Like any other wine award competition in South Africa the evening had some controversy, but at the end of the night the best red and white box wines were crowned the winners.
Before we move to the winners we would like to thanks these producers who were kind enough to provide us with their best boxes: Drostdy-hof, Windmeul Cellars, Oranje Rivier Cellars, Robertson Winery, and Du Toitskloof Winery.
So who makes the best red and white box wine in South Africa?
3rd Place
White: Carnival – Dry White from Oranje Rivier Cellars
Red: Bon Vino – Red from Boland Cellers
2nd Place
White: Windmeul – Mill White
Red: Dorstdy-hof – Cabernet Sauvignon
And the winners
The 2010 Best White Box Wine is: Drostdy-hof – Sauvignon Blanc 2010
The 2010 Best Red Box Wine is: Du Toitskloof – Pinotage / Merlot / Ruby Cabernet
