The UCT GSB open day on the regulatory and international trade challenges facing SA wine businesses

The University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business UCT GSB invites wine business practitioners to register for the annual open day of the wine business management programme in May 2016.

Following a successful wine business management programme in 2015, the UCT GSB has again made provision for a limited number of wine business practitioners to attend one of the contact days in its honours-level wine business management specialisation module. Taking place on Wednesday 11th May 2016, the open day will be devoted to regulatory and international trade challenges (and opportunities) facing wine businesses in South Africa. This topic has received significant media attention lately and represents a critical gap in wine education in South Africa. It follows that there is a growing desire amongst practitioners, across the wine value chain, for more insight and knowledge into this complex environmentparticularly in relation to emerging markets.

Developed in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the programme will be delivered by a number of industry experts and academics. Some of the themes addressed will be: old and new world approaches to wine product regulation (including PGI’s and IP conventions); the EU-SA Bilateral Agreements (EPA) and other trade agreements such as AGOA; challenges relating to liquor licencing and legislation; current certification, standardisation and export conventions; export risk management and exchange rate volatility; logistics and market access challenges in emerging markets.

Presenters and panellists* include: Wendy Jonker (DAFF), Günter Müller (DAFF), Fluerette Coetzee (DTI), Jessica Axelson (Adams and Adams), Jacky Buys (RMB), Danie Cronjé (Cluver Markotter) Trudi Hartzenberg (TRALAC), Conrad Hendry (HKTDC), Tina Swigelaar (Distell), Daniel Schietekat (IPW), A/Professor Mlenga Jere (UCT GSB), and Kurt Moore (SALBA/ARA).

The programme will present a unique opportunity for wine business practitioners to update their knowledge in a field considered to be one of the foundations of contemporary wine business management. It also presents an opportunity to network with fellow industry practitioners and students on the wine business management programme. Registration occurs between 07h45 and 08H15 and the last session will conclude at 18h00. Refreshments (including lunch) will be served during the course of the day.

Please note that space is limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Follow this link to register or contact Ann Wium on [email protected].
