Wine Review: Glen Carlou Curator’s Collection Mourvedre 2014

It’s all change at Paarl winery Glen Carlou with businessman Wayne Pitout acquiring it last year from Hess Family Wine Estates and Johnnie Calitz, previously of Anura, replacing Arco Laarman as winemaker.

It remains to be seen where Calitz takes Glen Carlou wines stylistically but Laarman has left behind a smart Mourvèdre 2014 under the small-batch Curator’s Collection label.

Matured for 24 months in old French oak, it’s accessible but not too simple. On the nose, cherry and raspberry, spice and fynbos while the palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity and a savoury finish. Altogether a very more-ish drop. Price: R105 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 91/100.
