2 Double Golds and 2 Golds for De Krans Varietal Range

De Krans Wines has continued to bring home the awards, and the latest accolades to join an already impressive line-up are those from the Ultra Value Wine Challenge 2019/2020 results.

Double Gold went to the Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and Pinotage Rosé 2019, respectively. The Wild Ferment Chardonnay 2018 and Free Run Chenin Blanc 2019 were each awarded Gold. The Ultra Value Wine Challenge is an unique competition which puts consumers first by identifying the very best wine buys that sell for under R150 per bottle.

“We are thrilled with the fantastic results for De Krans at this year’s Ultra Value Wine Challenge! These results are testament of the huge effort that our whole team has put into improving the quality of our entire varietal range over the past few years, culminating in two Double Gold and two Gold awards for De Krans this year,” says co-owner and MD Boets Nel.

Using an old wooden basket press, the pressure on the grapes for the De Krans Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is much softer, therefore resulting in gentle tannins and allowing for the wine to be enjoyed immediately. Still staying true to the typical cabernet character of dark fruit and cherry cigar, this wine is a refreshing alternative to the heavyweights synonymous with this category. With only mild oak maturation, this Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon is perfect for an everyday drinking wine, or for that dinner with friends. The same vintage was a Gold medal recipient at this year’s Vitis Vinifera Awards.

The De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2019, a Double Gold recipient in the 2019 Rosé Rocks competition, is packed with red fruit flavour and a balanced acidity, resulting in a burst of freshness.  On the nose you’ll pick up soft elegant rose petals, candy floss and hints of strawberries.

The name ‘Wild Ferment’ in the name of the De Krans Wild Ferment Chardonnay 2018 not only gives the wine a boutique feel, but also highlights the specific wine making process. No yeast is added to the wine and the spontaneous fermentation allows for a slower fermentation process, which in turn results in a more complex wine. Once the fermentation is completed, the wine is racked and kept on its fine lees for a further 6 months before bottling. This unwooded Chardonnay has lovely notes of citrus and butterscotch on the nose and boasts, with full mouth flavours of lime, grapefruit and a creamy butterscotch on the palate. The wine also has a refreshing acidity, which is well balanced with the fruit flavours. The same vintage was also awarded a spot in the Top 5 Chardonnay’s at the inaugural 2019 Best Value Chardonnay tasting.

The accessibility of the palate of the unwooded De Krans Free Run Chenin Blanc 2019 together with the great value for money makes this a favourite every day drinking white. Not only is this an easy drinking wine, but it was also recently awarded a Gold Medal at the 2019 Gold Wine Awards. This wine is packed with tropical fruit flavours as a result of using only the free run juice (the first batch of juice before the grapes are pressed), The fruit character gives the wine a full mouth feel and has a fresh, balanced acidity.
