25 Things to do at Lanzerac Estate in 25 Hours

I love the fast pace, excitement and glamour of Cape Town but sometimes it’s nice to get away from the stress and strain of city life, even if it’s just for a day. With Stellenbosch a convenient hour’s drive away, there’s really no reason not to pack a bag and head to the winelands for a relaxing break.

Lanzerac is one of South Africa’s most iconic wine estates, and honestly you would ideally want to spend more than a day at this 5 star establishment with its wide range of offerings. If for some reason you only have a short period of time at your disposal, here’s a guide that includes an assortment of delicious and rejuvenating things to do in 25 hours at the estate.

1. Taste some wine
ETA: 11am

Head to the Tasting Room to sample and savour some of the estate’s  superb wines on the veranda. The Tasting Room at Lanzerac is open seven days a week, and offers visitors a selection of informative tastings including a Wine & Chocolate Tasting.

2. Go for lunch at Lanzerac Deli
ETA: 12pm

The deli is situated right next to the Tasting Room, and offers inside and outside seating. Tuck into one of the delicious platters on offer, while deciding on which piece of cake to have for dessert!

3. Check into the Lanzerac Hotel
ETA: 2pm

From the moment you arrive the very essence of its 16th century history will enchant you. From intricately carved marble fireplaces and imposing staircases to authentic period furniture and hand-woven tapestries, the Lanzerac Hotel invites you to relax in its bars, courtyard areas, and its renowned Craven lounge. Each of the individually decorated en-suite bedrooms and suites reflects the taste of Cape Dutch finery of centuries past, with 5 star touches and all modern amenities.

4. Relax with a glass of Lanzerac wine on the patio of your suite

Please keep in mind that the Western Cape currently faces a serious drought due to poor rainfall, so don’t waste the water!! A quick shower will also do.

9. Go for a pre-dinner drink at the Taphuis
ETA: 7pm

The Taphuis is one of the oldest bars in the Western Cape, and both barmen have worked at the hotel for over 40 years. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink while you listening to all the tales of the different eras of the hotel.

10. Tuck into a fine dining dinner experience at the Governors Hall Restaurant
ETA: 8pm

Get ready for a sophisticated dining experience at the hotel’s main à la carte restaurant which is also home to portraits of past Cape Governors. Here Executive Chef Stephen Fraser delivers an upscale menu, showcasing the finest local and imported produce.

11. Decompress with a glass of whiskey in the Craven Lounge

Aptly named after Daniël Hartman Craven, who was arguably South Africa’s best-known rugby administrator, the Craven Lounge is a true representation of South African heritage. Enjoy a glass of whiskey or a cup of coffee while you reminisce over the incredible dinner you just had.

12. Return to your room and watch some TV
