30 Percent of Eatout Top 30 Restaurants are on a Wine Estate

Chef Liam Tomlin and Luke Dale-Roberts might have very well broke the Eatout Awards, with no less than 7 restaurants between the two – and rightfully so, but it’s the Cape Winelands that host the most. Always wanted to type that.

This year 24 entrepreneurial chefs, together with a small army of personnel, delivered the goods and carved out a prestigious spot for their respective restaurants in the Eatout Awards Top 30 Best Restaurant list 2018.

From the ever present to the new, the nominees are all well deserving regardless of where they’re located, but if you find yourself in the Western Cape, chances are pretty good that you can check into one of these. Even more so if you’re on a wine estate. In fact, 10 of the top 30 restaurants nominated by Eatout are on a wine estate. This excludes foodie strongholds in the Winelands like Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, not to mention previous winery restaurant nominees like Faber, Terroir, Pierneef and Rust en Vrede, who were not listed this year.

You can never go wrong betting on the Winelands for an excellent meal, but if we have to put money on who will walk away with the Best Restaurant in South Africa for 2018, we’ll need to look north. Let’s face it, it can’t be The Test Kitchen again. Even with The Test Kitchen back on the World Top 50 Best Restaurant List, their monotonous dominance of the Eatout Awards will have to come to an end, if only by statistical chance.

Last years runner-up, Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient, must be the hot favourite to take it home this year. Chef Chantel Dartnall and her team have been homing in on that first spot for a couple of years now and bagging the Best Female Chef In The World award is just more reason to speculate on a Mosaic win.

All will be revealed at the Eatout Award Show on Sunday 18 November at GrandWest in Cape Town.
