5 Celebrity Absinthe Drinkers

Most of us know not to mess with absinthe. This anise-flavoured spirit has turned many men into mice and it’s therefore no wonder that some refer to it as the “Green Fairy”.

Absinthe was the drink of choice among writers, poets, artists and intellectuals in Europe in the late 19th century, and was going strong till the early 20th century prohibition took effect.

Some famous celebs are still great fans of this green little devil and we salute their bravery with a cheers!

Eminem

Not to much surprise, Eminem is a real absinthe enthusiast. The Real Slim Shady loves the stuff so much that he once rented the whole bar in London after the barmen refused to serve him more than the recommended quantity of absinthe. Within his image of a bad guy, he had a party in the bar, Astral, in Soho and the green liquid never dried out.

Johnny Depp

“I hated cocaine but I used to like Absinthe, which is like marijuana; drink too much and you suddenly realize why Van Gogh cut off his ear.” After the filming of Sleepy Holow in Great Britain it became clear that his actor likes absinthe very much and grabs a bottle sooner than he would go to Aspen.

Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson thrives on absinthe. When asked about his absinthe binges he replied: “I think I was trying to get to that place where you think and behave like a child or a lunatic. Sometimes the doors need to be opened. That’s why so many writers and creative people in the past fell prey to it.”

Tommy Lee

Pamela Anderson’s ex hubby quit alcohol in the 80’s after a quick rehab check-in but it was not long before his was back with a vengeance. He told Radio One: “I was in London strip club Stringfellows recently – just for a quick ‘taste’ – and I can’t remember the last hour of the night I was drinking absinthe. There’s not a chance I’m gonna change.”

Vincent Van Gogh

The man lopped off his ear while drinking absinthe. Van Gogh indulged to an abnormal degree in various activities which undermined his health, such as constant smoking and eating very poorly but absinthe was his great love. Van Gogh painted many of his works in ochres and pale greens, which are the colours of absinthe. Many of these paintings also depict the bar in which Van Gogh drank absinthe, and himself with glasses of the apéritif.
