A Resurrected Spier

My very first visit to Spier, back in 2007, was by no means a memorable occasion. What should have been a fun day out at one of South Africa’s most recognised wine estates, turned into a complete nightmare and we left feeling disappointed and ripped-off. I vowed never to return until an unexpected invitation made its way into my mailbox five years later…

It was not just any invite. I mean, how can one decline a Chauffeur driven ride in a 1938 Rolls Royce to the Great Gatsby Show, followed by overnight accommodation in the four star Spier Hotel? To top it all, the next morning we were invited on a two hour Segway adventure, followed by lunch at Eight Restaurant.

Needless to say, the whole experience was incredible. With so many new activities available for young and old, I felt the need to return to Spier and so I did.

We arrived at the hotel shortly after 10 on sizzling Saturday morning. General manager, Wayne Siepman and his team welcomed us with a glass of Spier MCC before being transport to the Eagle Encounterssituated on the other side of the estate. It was a once in a life time experience that I will never forget.

After an educational and adrenaline filled encounter with an eagle, we strolled over to the new wine tasting centre. The place is a far cry from the previous venue. A massive chandelier, made out of 357 wine bottles, takes center stage in the modern and spacious tasting area which opens up on a large deck. There’s also a variety of table setting options including long tables and comfortable couches.

Another refreshing improvement is the variety of wine tasting options. Visitors can pick and chooses from a selection of wines, ranging from the estate’s Signature range to the two premium wine ranges. Prices are fair and there’s even an innovative food and wine pairing option, priced at R80 per person.

After an informative and friendly tasting experience, conducted by funny man, Tyson, we made our way to Eight restaurant, where we enjoyed a fresh and well prepared buffet style lunch. The price per plate all depends on the weight of the food  and guests can also order a selection of prime cut meats from the restaurant’s braai.

We all enjoyed the concept but felt that the food was slightly overpriced. This can whoever be excused, taking in consideration that only ethically produced meat and vegetables are used in the farm-to-table eating experiences at Eight and Eight to Go, where one can purchase picnics to enjoy on the lush lawns of the estate. When it come to biodynamic farming, Spier is on top of their game and has won numerous awards in this category over the years.

After a satisfying lunch, we made our way back to the hotel to check in. The room we stayed in was extremely spacious and well equipped. According to the lady who kindly turned down our bed, every suite in the hotel features artworks from the Spier Collection, providing each room with a touch of individuality.

A quick dip in one of the many pools was just what we needed to cool down before heading over to Spier’s Hotel Restaurant and Wine Bar. The 3 course dinner we enjoyed was mighty impressive and 5 star quality in my opinion.

After a good night’s rest, it was time for a breakfast fit for royalty, before heading back to the wine centre, where we collected the audio tour equipment from the Gables Audio Walk. The narrator is a slave woman who grew up on the Spier in 1836 and her voice takes you on a entertaining journey, exploring the rich history of the estate along with the love, hardship, and sorrow that came with it.

We ended our two day adventure at Moyo, where we enjoyed a couple of cocktails over a game of backgammon.

Bad service and uninformed staff were probably Spier biggest enemy in the past but things have sure changed. The one thing that was apparent throughout our two day stay was the excellent and friendly service we received. Spier is no longer an African amusement park where international holidaymakers come to buy curios. It’s a place where we as locals can spend a day (or two), and rediscover our rich wine heritage while enjoying the fantastic facilities, adventures and cuisine the establishment has to offer.
