A Sporting Chance for the Fairview Community

Situated in the Paarl Winelands, Fairview Wine and Cheese Farm is home to a large community of staff and their families.  The rural location means that there is little to no access to after-school or weekend activities for youth living on the farm. An avid outdoor sports enthusiast, Owner Charles Back identified the need for healthy extracurricular stimulation and set up the Fairview/Dryland/GIANT sports development program, a mentorship and training opportunity for members of the Fairview community who are interested in becoming involved in mountain biking and trail running.

“There is so much pressure on the youth here to move to the city and become involved in drugs and other unwholesome activities,” says Back.  “We wanted to provide a platform for more constructive leisure activities, and our position right next to the Paarl Mountain made mountain biking and running ideal choices,” he explains.  “Outdoor sports also provide the opportunity for participants to see new places and to meet people from all walks of life,” he continues.  “So far we have been able to enter our runners and riders into events in Oudtshoorn, Knysna and Port Elizabeth, to name a few,” he concludes.
