A taste adventure at Uitkyk’s Winter Pancake Pairing

Head out to Uitkyk wine estate on Saturday 24 August for the penultimate in the popular winter pancake pairing events, which pairs the estate’s fabled wines with a variety of succulent savoury pancakes.

Advance bookings for the pairing at a charge of R60 a head are essential. Guests are seated at tables in the historic flatroofed manor house, one of only three of its kind in South Africa, and attributed to the 18th century French architect, Louis Michel Thibault. Dubbed the Cat and Mouse pairing, the event is a light-hearted tribute to the estate’s former feline mascot who chose the comfort of the manor house over loyalty to his departing owners and lived out his life lazing on the famous flat roof.

The pairing includes Flat Roof Manor Pinot Grigio matched with a spicy Thai green-curry pancake; Uitkyk Chardonnay with a slow-roasted pumpkin and brie pancake; Flat Roof Manor Merlot with a roast chicken, camembert and sage pancake; Flat Roof Manor Shiraz Mourvèdre Viognier with a roast beef, baby spinach and cranberry jelly pancake; and finally, Uitkyk Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, with a pancake of sautéed onion, mushroom and Edam cheese.

Guests are also invited to browse through the estate’s wine shop where they can taste and buy wines, and where coffee, brownies and cheese platters are on sale, as well as a brandy and chocolate pairing. A pancake maker will be on hand to take orders for sweet pancakes to enjoy at home.

There are two seatings for the pairing; one at 11h00 and another at 14h00. Booking for the limited number of places is essential – call 021 884 4416 or send an e-mail to [email protected].
