Bobo’s Brasserie: The hottest new sunset spot in Cape Town

2018 has been an interesting year for restaurant openings in Cape Town. Rising operating costs, a spate of notable closings, and shifting tastes have all contributed to the ever-changing restaurant landscape in the Mother City.

Always looking to introduce new and exciting things to the local hospitality scene, The Kove Collection has added yet another restaurant to its ever-growing portfolio. Bobo’s Brasserie managed to squeak open just before year-end, taking over the space previously occupied by Pepenero.

The seaside venue has been given a stunning refurbishment that includes bright-coloured floral wallpaper and plush leather seating, reminiscent of the Continental bistros of yesteryear. Aesthetically, it’s an absolutely beautiful restaurant. The view is impressive any time of day, but you get the best return on your investment during sunset. 

For lunch and dinner, the menu reads like a glutton’s feast, boosting a modern interpretation of French bistro classics, while the wine list shows off South Africa’s finest, with a couple of solid choices available by the glass.

On the day of our visit, I ordered the escargot as an appetizer. If you like snails, then this is the dish to try! Be sure to hold on to your bread – you’ll want it to mop up the incredible garlic butter that comes with the snails.

My lunch companion opted for the prawn avocado, with pink sauce, cress and vinaigrette. Everything from the look to the seasoning were perfect.

For my main course, I order the escalope of veal, served with asparagus, mushroom, caper & veal jus. Unfortunately, the veal was overcooked and the capers did not bring much flavour to the dish, as they were infinitesimal. The portion, however, was more than generous.

My lunch buddy opted for the duck leg confit. It looked appetising. Although the duck leg was perfectly crispy on the outside, the meat was a tad to dry on the inside. I’m guessing that’s why the waiter recommended a side sauce with the dish.

As for dessert, it is compulsory! As is one final shot of whisky from the extraordinary list of Single Malts on offer.

There’s no denying that when it comes to the perfect formula for a show-stopping sunset spot, Bobo’s got it down. It’s the perfect place to kick back with an innovative cocktail or an ice cold beer as the sun gives way to the moon.
