Kleine Zalze must have shed a tear or two when Johan Joubert, the winery’s cellarmaster of the past 12 years, decided to return to his original roots. His philosophy and study to find the best part of the soil in one sight-selected vineyard block paved the way for Kleine Zalze this year, when the 2013 Family Reserve Chenin Blanc were ranked amongst the Top 10 Chenins in South Africa.

Boland Cellars must be smiling all the way since Johan’s appointment. One quarter of Boland Cellar’s annual production consist out of chenin blanc after all.

Producing 3 million litres of well-made chenin blanc must be quite the challenge. Johan however proved his worth at a recent wine media gathering, held at Cascade Country Manor outside Paarl. During the informal tasting, guests had the opportunity to compare 2014 tank samples from various well-known chenin blanc producers. Selected from various wine producing regions across South Africa, each chenin blanc showed just how much influence different soil types have on certain vines.

The Boland Cellar 5 Climates 2014 is the perfect every day wine. It offers uncomplicated quality at a bargain price of R32 a bottle.

If you are looking for something slightly more complexed, then the Boland Cellar Reserve No. 1 Unwooded 2014 is the wine for you. Pungent aromas of guavas, citrus blossom and passion fruit greet the nose. This award-winning wine received the General Smuts Trophy at the 2014 Young Wine Show and retails at R60 a bottle.

The Boland Cellar Reserve No. 1 Barrel Matured 2013 offers a palate that is rich and dense with light citrus flavours and a refreshing finish. The wine is available from the cellar and priced at R62.50 a bottle.
