Boplaas achieves top prices at Nederburg Auction 2018 for fine wine

A Port-style wine by the renowned Boplaas Family Vineyards has put this fortified style back in the spotlight after it achieved its best price to date at the 44th Nederburg Auction near Paarl on the weekend.

The event is South Africa’s premier industry auction for fine wines and the oldest of its kind for New World wines. It sees participation of some of the world’s biggest retailers as well as local and overseas collectors. The panel selecting wines for the auction this year comprised of local and international wine experts.

The famous Calitzdorp producer had two of its wines feature on the auction list – the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2004, which sold for R4800 per six-bottle case; and, the Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve  2012, which also achieved a top selling price of R2 400 per six-bottle case.

“This was excellent news for us,” says Boplaas Family Vineyards owner Carel Nel. “While we are generally well-known for our Port, these prices also reflect the appeal of our still wines made from Portuguese varieties among connoisseurs.

“Boplaas has invested substantially in consistent quality from vine to bottle and, as the success at the Nederburg Auction shows, this investment has paid off for both us and the buyer of Boplaas wine.”

Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2004 is no stranger to awards. A five-star wine in Platter’s South African wine guide, it won double gold at Veritas Awards; claimed a top prize in the Museum class at the CAPPA (Cape Port Producers Association); and, scored 95 with influential reviewer Miguel Chan, and 95 from Wine Magazine.

The Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2012 too has collected its share of accolades. It included a Top 100 SA Wines and Top 10 in the CAPPA Challenge.

The wines are available nationwide at limited outlets due to the small volume that is produced every year. They are also available for purchase through the Boplaas website, www.boplaas.co.za, which provides more information about the Boplaas range of fine wines, fortified wines and brandy.
