Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V flying high – SAA “Port of the Year” Trophy

Capping off an exceptional year of success, the Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve Non-Vintage (N/V) was selected as “Port of the Year” and will be served to all flying Premium Class with SAA in 2015, while not to be outdone the Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V can be enjoyed while flying Business Class on our national carrier.

Nestled in the picturesque Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, wedged between the Rooiberg and soaring heights of the Swartberg, this somewhat harsh climatic region has been home to the Nel’s of Boplaas since the mid-1800’s and from where a legacy of crafting fine fortifieds, wines and brandies has been established. Capping off a stellar year of achievement, the Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V took top honours at the 30th SAA Wine Awards – the blind tasting selection for wines to be served on the national carrier for the coming year by a panel of wine professionals. Not to be outdone, the standard Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V will be served to all flying business class in 2015.

The art of crafting a fine Cape Tawny “Port’ at Boplaas is one of patience, dedication and expert blending of barrel matured wines some spending more than a decade in barrel prior to blending. The Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V is crafted from traditional Portuguese varietals, vinified according to traditional methods in lagar, aged in a selection of old barrels – including Port Pipes, and blended from the best selection of barrels to create a complex red-brown Tawny coloured wine brimming with toasted almond, pecan caramel, walnut, toffee, bright wood spice and wisps of Demerara sugar, All-spice and macerated black plum.

Crafted from traditional Portuguese varietals, utilizing artisanal vinification methods and aged in barrels for six to ten years prior to blending; the Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V displays the redolent red-brown Tawny colour, hints of prune, honey, subtle wood spice, walnuts, roast almonds, lusciously sweet palate with hints of Brûlée, salted caramel, dried peach and a long-finish that typifies a fine Tawny. Consistently a top performer, the Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V has garnered a 4 ½ Stars from Platter’s 2015.
An ideal after dinner accompaniment to mature cheeses, dried fruits and dark chocolate, this fine Cape Tawny also pairs perfectly with roast duck, slow roasted pork belly, mild Cape Malay dishes and Cantonese dishes. Contrary to popular belief, both the Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V & Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V should be enjoyed lightly chilled especially in warmer climes or summertime.
For those not taking to the sky and enjoying the best SAA has to offer, the full Boplaas range of Tawnies, table wines, Cape fortifieds, Muscats & brandies are available for tasting and purchase from our cellar door in our cellar door in Calitzdorp, as well our tasting room in Little Brak along the Garden route.
