Boplaas Ports And Wines Earn Top Marks From UK Wine Writers

The world-class quality of Boplaas port and wines was again highlighted in glowing reviews on separate occasions this week by internationally acclaimed wine writers Jamie Goode and Tim Atkin.

Their opinions re-affirm the significant role that great terroir and winery expertise plays over time.

Portuguese grape varieties that Boplaas cultivates, thrive in the Calitzdorp region because they are hardier and well-adapted to warmer climates. They are anticipated to become even more prominent as global warming increases.

In the winery, Carel Nel has been the Boplaas cellar master for the past 38 years and a member of the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild since 1988. He is the only Southern Cape member of the invitation-only organisation.

Acknowledging the winning combination, Jamie Goode awarded the Boplaas CWG Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2015 an outstanding 95/100. His report on the wine states: “This is bold and powerful; sleek and elegant.  Sweet, floral and quite luscious with great purity and some liquorice and spice.”

Indeed, the 2015 vintage was an exceptional one across the Cape and one of the best of the past 30 years.  The port incorporated Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Franca and Souzao, selected from specific low-yielding vineyards.

In the very same week, the The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2018 scored 94 points from UK Master of Wine, Tim Atkin.

The Vintage Reserves continue the Nel Family heritage of crafting the very finest Cape fortifieds utilising Portuguese varieties, traditional vinification and dedication to style, to create wine that will offer decades of enjoyment.

This steadfast dedication has seen amongst others, 16 Boplaas port wines receive five-star ratings in Platter’s South African Wine Guide since the 1994 edition.

Atkin also awarded the Boplaas Touriga Nacional 2019 with 90 points, making it the best valued red wine in South Africa. The Gamka Family Reserve Red 2017, a blend of Portuguese varieties, received 92 points.  The Gamka Branca Family Reserve White 2018, with the Portuguese variety Verdelho, received 91 points.

All these wines and more are available via Boplaas’s online shop at www.boplaas.co.za. Boplaas ships all over SA, free of charge if a purchase totals more than R1 500 or 12 bottles.
