Bowie-mania hits the wine world as an almost-forgotten label makes a comeback

The death of David Bowie this month has predictably sparked mass buying of the musical chameleon’s back catalog, but it has also done wonders for an almost-forgotten wine he had a hand in creating.

Three years ago, Bowie participated in a project called “Whatever it Takes”, which was produced by Valencia winemaker Bodegas Vicente Gandía, and was a solidarity project that saw celebrity-endorsed wines raising money for charity. Stars including Coldplay, Charlize Theron, Pierce Brosnan and Penelope Cruz also participated.

The project asked the celebrities to design a symbol of hope, and also write a message of hope for the future. These were then depicted on the bottles of Spanish wine in a variety of ways with the endorsement of the stars themselves, and raised more than €450,000 ($490,000) for infrastructure projects in Africa. Bodegas Vicente Gandía worked with aid agencies to provide drinking water in areas of poverty, as well as sending medicines and helping to build schools and other infrastructure.
