Boy digs up 1,400-year old wine press in Jerusalem

A young ultra-Orthodox Israeli boy and his friends meticulously excavated a 1,400-year-old wine press in Jerusalem, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported Monday.

The find was initially dug up by the boys, aged around 13 years old, who described themselves as archaeology buffs. After an alert citizen jogging in the area noticed the ancient stone structure, she notified the Israel Archaeological Institute, who sent inspectors over to examine the site.

According to Haaretz, “the inspectors who rushed over agreed that somebody seemed to have been excavating methodically, and with care,” despite the Israel Antiquities Authority not having authorized the dig.

The inspectors noticed a young boy observing the site and found the answer.
