DBs Top 10 South African Winemakers To Watch

The Drinks Business magazine’s, Lucy Shaw recently compiled a list of top South Africa’s young winemakers to watch. You can view the list below with some additional comments by us:

 

  1. Craig Hawkins – Lammershoek (Swartland)
    One of the original revolutionaries.
  2. Callie Louw – Porseleinberg (Swartland)
    With one of the most elegand wine labels in South Africa, Callie’s Syrah counters the saying “Do not judges a book by it’s cover” cause in this case you can.
  3. Peter-Allan Finlayson – Crystallum (Hemel-and-Aarde)
    Peter-Allan’s Crystallum Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made waves in the industry since 2007 when he and his brother started the project.
  4. Matthew Day – Klein Constantia (Constantia)
    Matthew became winemaker at Klein Constantia in 2010, and we are excited to see him experiment with acacia barrels at this icon estate.
  5. Chris and Suzaan Alheit – Alheit Vineyards (Hemel-and-Aarde)
    Their Cartology 2011 recently picked up 5 stars from The Platter Guide and winetimes also picked it as our top white at the 5 star tasting.
  6. Howard Booysen – Highlands Road (Elim)
    From sommelier to winemaker, Howard made his own Howard Booysen wines in 2010. Last week it was reported that Howard will join the Highlands Road team, as their new winemaker.
  7. Jurgen Gouws – Intellego (Swartland)
    Jurgen boutique brand Intellego, means, “I understand” in Latin, but it’s not until you taste his chenin blanc that you truly do.
  8. Johan Meyer– Mount Abora Vineyards (Swartland)
    Johan also produce his own wine range – JH Meyer Signature Wines – made from Elgin grapes.
  9. Gunter Schultz – Kleinood (Stellenbosch)
    One of the five wine making Schultz brothers. Gunter strives to make honest, complex and elegant wines.
  10. Alex Starey – Keermont (Stellenbosch)
    At this year’s Cape Wine winetimes selected Alex’s wines as the top wine discovery of the show.
