De Bos – Handcrafted wines, made with love

If you care about the people that do the work, the people care about the work they do. The same can be said about the way we respect and care for our environment. That’s the philosophy of the Bosman family, who recently added a new range of to their wine portfolio, called De Bos.

The wine range is an extension of their vision. ”It’s a celebration as well as a reminder that man and nature need to respect each other, and that small contributions could have a great impact”, according to Petrus Bosman, the Managing Director of Bosman Family Vineyards.

De Bos range is a tribute to this successful partnership between the Bosman family and Adama Appollo Workers Trust,  which was born out of ancient lineage and a community’s unified respect for the land they own, the vines they graft, the vineyards they manage, the grapes they harvest and the families they are members of.

Bosman Family Vineyards have 250 permanent workers and because they are Fairtrade accredited, it has opened doors for them and their workers in the form of crèches, playgrounds and buses to take the workers’ children to school, as well as being listed in top UK supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer.

As we all know, quality wines starts in the vineyard and therefore big emphasis is placed on viticulture and good relations with their working force. Only the best fruit from vineyards in the Hermon, Walker Bay and Wellington regions were selected for the making of these wines. For winemaker Corlea Fourie it’s extremely important to create an authentic reflection of the sites and regions the grapes are hand-harvested from. They therefore nurture the grapes to form elegant wines with pure fruit and varietal expression. “We are custodians of our vineyards from the process of grafting our vines by hand to crafting these wines by hand, and this creates very real expression of our pursuit of excellence.”

All these good practices are reflected in the De Bos wines. The range consist out of a Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. All 3 wines is Fairtade accredited and a result many amazing social projects has been initiated, maintained and expanded on the farms owned by the Bosman family and the Adama Appollo Workers Trust.

The launch of the De Bos wine range took place at The Potluck Club in Woodstock, Cape Town.

The 2012 De Bos Sauvignon Blanc really gelled well with my palate. It’s refreshing, with a bit of spunk tempered by some tropical fruit notes. It’s the perfect wine to crack open and carry to the pool during the humid swelter of summer.

The same can be said of the 2012 De Bos Chenin Blanc. An exquisite taste of distinctive fresh qualities. This Chenin Blanc is a real crowd pleaser and over-delivers on quality. The wine offers great balance and freshness and makes for the perfect patio sipper.

For those red wine lovers who are always on the hunt for a wine to enjoy everyday without paying a fortune, look no further than the 2011 De Bos Cabernet Sauvignon. All the grape used in this wine were picked by hand. The wine shows blackberry and vanilla bean oak on the nose with a dry, firm and long, currant driven palate.

The Bosman Family story might date back to over 300 years ago but that does not stop the 8th generation of the family from continuing the great work done over the years. The Bosmans come across as people who care a great deal, not only for the environment, but also for their fellow human beings. The De Bos wines reflect these characteristics, and every drop offers pure enjoyment, made with love.

The De Bos wines are available across South Africa from Makro and other leading retailers and restaurants and the expected retail price is R58 for the whites and R68 for the Cabernet Sauvignon.
