Double Gold for De Krans at Veritas

It’s another win for De Krans. This time at the prestigious Veritas Awards, which saw SA’s leading port producer scoop Double Gold for the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Double Gold 2015. The awards were announced a gala event on Saturday, 6 October which was attended by the who’s who of the wine and media fraternities.

The Reserve range is proving to be the one to watch with the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2016 receiving Gold on the night as well. Last month both of these port-style wines were each presented with a Platinum Award at the 2018 Michelangelo International Wine Awards. The Cape Vintage Reserve 2016 also received an exceptional rating of 96 points by revered UK authority Tim Atkin MW

Winemaker Louis van der Riet describes the Cape Vintage Reserve as a big wine full of ripe dark fruit notes of plum, mulberry and black currents. Well-rounded with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins, which results in a wine that would mature well over 30years.

Regarded as South Africa’s premier wine and brandy competition, this year the Veritas Awards received 1 677 entries, of which 50 Double Gold and 219 Gold medals were handed out. Six prominent judges from around the globe were in action at Veritas 2018, namely Janåke Johansson and Nikita Nördstrom (both from Sweden), Joe Wadsack and Richard Kelley MW (both from the UK), Tersina Shieh (Hong Kong) and Treve Ring (Canada).

‘With the Klein Karoo in the throes of one of the worst droughts recorded, the recognition we’ve been receiving on both the local and international front has certainly helped the team keep a positive attitude and continue producing the best product we possibly can,’ says co-owner Boets Nel.
