When Nat King Cole sang about Route 66 he not only romanticised the idea of automobile travel but also put the ‘main street of America’ on the world map.
It’s a pity that no one has sung an ode to South Africa’s Route 62, though it meanders between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, the Langkloof and Port Elizabeth with awe-inspiring views at each twist and turn.
Drive down a section of this 850-kilometre Wine Route and you will be rewarded with a scenery that is packaged with magnificent landscapes, towering cliffs, crystal clear streams, ever-changing colours of majestic mountains, rivers, vineyards and orchards.
Route 62 is the longest wine route in the world. It leads you through the wine-growing areas of Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson and the Klein Karoo.
