Drostdy-Hof – tasty, chirpy and cheap

WineTime normally starts at around 5pm in our house and there’s no better way to celebrate the end-of-work-day than with a glass of wine, paired with Oprah or some other brain-dead TV show. The only problem is that we can’t open a R80 bottle of wine every night. We never stick to one  bottle, which means  WineTime can become very pricey and cost us a staggering R4800 a month. OUCH!

Therefore we are always on the look-out for a wine that’s affordable and drinkable and this is no easy task. The options are endless and there’s nothing more annoying than opening a bottle of wine that taste like…well, you know what.

After our recent box wine tasting I decided to see what some of the brands have available in bottle form and came across a Drostdy-Hof Blanc de Blanc and Off-dry Rose. Retailing at around R26 and R27 respectively, I did not know what to expect and felt extremely nervous. But hey, as they say: You’ll never know unless you try…

The back label of the Drostdy-Hof Blanc de Blanc describes the wine as a crisp dry white wine to enjoy immediately (I like that) and serve with poultry, seafood and salads. At R26 is a complete steal! Nothing serious about the wine, just one of those that you can sip on without thinking about it. It’s not sour nor sweet, just perfectly balanced and pretty tasty.

The Drostdy-Hof off-dry Rose states that it’s a medium to light bodied wine with fresh, fruity flavours of strawberry and plum. It’s for immediate enjoyment and should be served chilled. It can be enjoyed on it’s own or with picnic snacks and light meals such as salads, pastas or grilled seafood. I would say, bring on my bikini and jump in the pool! This wine is perfect for summer and it over-delivers on taste and flavour.

Both these wines are also available in 5 litre packs and with box wine being so hot right now, you can’t afford to be seen without one in your fridge.
