Eat, Stay and Play at Excelsior Wine Estate in Robertson

There is something inherently attractive about the Robertson Wine Valley. Could be the wine, but maybe it’s also the endless views of rolling vineyards, the mountains in the backdrop, the slow pace and the country-style food.

I have many favourites in the wine region, one of them being Excelsior Wine Estate. The De Wet family have farmed at Excelsior since 1859. Wine has always been made on the estate and the family’s devotion to the grape extends from the winery’s tasting room to the luxurious Manor Guesthouse.

Taste @ Excelsior

The tasting facility at Excelsior is situated on the water’s edge of the farm dam and offers phenomenal views of the Langeberg Mountains and distant vineyards from its stilted, wooden deck.  It is also here where the real wine-making fun happens! The wine blending experience at Excelsior allows visitors to take up the tradition of blending the farm’s red varietals, bottle, cork and label your wine and return home with your very own creation that combines generations of skill and flair with your own style.

Expect to pay: R70. The Excelsior Wine Tasting and Wine Blending experience include 3 wine tastings, bottling, corking and labelling your own blended.

Graze @ Excelsior

The restaurant and deli have that laid-back feel that might lead to you munching on roosterkoek and sipping rose with a friend all afternoon. The menu offers lovely light meals, from salads to sandwiches. My menu highlight was the salmon salad topped with sweet potato crisps.

Stay @ Excelsior

The Excelsior Manor Guesthouse is a beautiful property that exudes wine country coziness. The Cape Dutch Revival Manor was built during the ostrich feather boom of the early 1900s and boasts nine classically decorated en-suite bedrooms.

From luxury bedding to a mini-fridge, complimentary coffee and tea, and free wifi; they think of every detail to make your stay perfect.

The night of my stay I enjoyed a magnificent 3-course meal, prepared by the guesthouse’s resident chef. The generous farm-style breakfast in the morning was as good!

The swimming pool, situated on the southern face of the house,  offers breathtakingly panoramic views of the vineyards and the Langeberg Mountain ranges.

There are three parts to an epic winelands getaway: Life-changing wine tastings, scrumptious meals and sumptuous accommodation. Excelsior Estate ticks all the boxes.
