Estéanna, Rietvallei’s Flagship

In common naval use the term flagship is the lead ship in a fleet of vessels, the one carrying the commanding admiral and flying his flag. Used more loosely, it is typically the first, largest, fastest and best known. Therefore the term ‘flagship’ cannot be more descriptive of Rietvallei’s Estéanna white and red.

With Kobus (winemaker & MD) being the ‘admiral’ in the metaphorical statement, the flag that he is flying with this flagship of his is very personal for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because both Esteanna wines are the result of years’ dedication and hard work. Allot of time and effort went into the making. More so than with any of his other wines.

And then there is the beautiful name Estéanna. Not just another name, but the unique combination of Kobus’ two darling daughters names, Esté and Annie. A very personal title for this product. Also, a very loud and clear declaration of its quality and value.

The Estéanna Red is a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and the White is an intuitive blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and a “drop” of Viognier. The Estéanna White is new to the range, with its first release (2011 vintage) on the shelves this year. “This exciting new addition to our portfolio is truly a dream come true. I’ve been working on the blend for years and finally with this 2011 vintage I’m pleased with the result,” said winemaker Kobus.

When it comes to the making of these two premium wines, the selection process already started with the identification of the specific vineyards and working at it with special care from pruning right through to harvesting, ensuring a low yield and superb quality. The wines are both full-bodied, complex wines. The kind you savour at very special occasions, with time allowing you to appreciate the multifaceted components of the wine and with special people to share the moment with. It is the sort of wine you enjoy with rich and exotic dishes that match its fullness and complexity.

Rietvallei Wine Estate is known for its history and family tradition. With Kobus being the 6th generation winemaker on the farm, this Estate has many stories to tell. Amongst others, the story of the 1908 Muscadel vineyard is probably the most well-known. The red Muscadel was planted in the above mentioned year by Kobus’ great-great-grandfather and is the oldest producing vineyard of its kind in South Africa.

The Esteanna wines are the premium selection of four different ranges, which include the Special Select, Classic Estate, John B and Stonedale wines. Each range has a specific purpose in the Estate’s portfolio, carefully selected and crafted to fit into their special place in the market.

Rietvallei’s Esteanna will be available from the Estate for R120 (White) and R190 (Red), and can also be found at selective retail outlets. For inquiries or orders, please contact Rietvallei at 023 626 3596, [email protected] or visit our website at www.rietvallei.co.za.
