Eye-pleasing Changes And The Return Of An Old Favourite

As some of you might have noticed, our Rietvallei Red Muscadel 2018 has seen a change in shape and size. This wine now boasts an elegant 500 ml bottle and has a new cork closure. Thus far, this new-look Muscadel has proved its worth by having received a 91-point rating at the Prescient Sweet Wine & Fortifieds Report 2020 hosted my Winemag.co.za.  The Rietvallei Red Muscadel 2018 is full-bodied and rich, but also gentle on the palate. A floral, muscat bouquet is evident on the nose, with a typical raisiny sweetness and an intense, rich flavour that lingers on the taste, while the ideal acidity balances and complements the sweetness.

Our Rietvallei Shiraz-dominated blend has also had some change, in the sense that the 2018 vintage has evolved into being a single-cultivar wine, i e 100% Shiraz. It used to be a Shiraz driven blend with between 15 and 25% Petit Verdot and a dash of Viognier.

Winemaker and owner Kobus Burger decided middle last year to do away with the blend and go back to the basics in the form of a straight Shiraz with spices of ground white pepper, hints of peach and toasty oak flavours. This wine is full-bodied with ripe tannins and a smooth, lengthy finish.
